School May Be The Best Place To Address PTSD In Young People
For way too many pupils attending urban schools in the U.S., learning takes a back seat to what is going on outside the classroom specifically, violence at home and in the community and few schools are equipped to help pupils make do. That could begin to change in the long run. A national class-action lawsuit filed alleges that the Compton Unified School District in California has failed to properly address its pupils experiences of injury. School districts, the suit contends, are obligated under federal disability law to provide support for pupils that have experienced injury. Compton schools would be needed to hire counsel and train workers to better understand pupils that have been exposed to traumatic life events in the event the court sides with the plaintiffs in the case. Attorneys in the case say they expect the case will help spur change on a national level. Meanwhile, some mental health professionals are doing what they can with the limited resources available to them to help
