Vietnam veteran shares struggles with PTSD


Almost 300,000 Vietnam veterans still live captivity. They live and work among us on American soil, but encounters and their memories continue to haunt them decades after the war. You go through so many traumas and see so many things that, frankly, I don t think human beings were supposed to see, says retired sailor Nick Wicker. He was drafted at 21-years old and worked during the Vietnam War in the engine room of a helicopter carrier. Then he spent many years working on subs. After 10 years of service in the Navy, he retired, but some of his memories never did. After talking to some of the people then, they didn t have a good handle on what PTSD was, he says. That analysis eventually came after a trip to the VA Medical Center in Dublin. Wicker then registered in their 12-week plan. The treatment basically forces you to bring the memories back, to relive them over and over and over again, and as you do, you re able to place them in the right place in your subconscious, he says.
