Service dogs helping veterans deal with PTSD


Post-traumatic stress disorder is a debilitating illness endured by many who served in the military in the nation s. Local veteran Ed Baldasari said since returning from Vietnam almost 50 years past, he is suffered from PTSD. It is tough. Folks simply do not realize, he said. When I came back from Vietnam, I d no notion what was wrong. I was dark. I was removed. Symptoms of PTSD may cause suicide; and include intense stress, nightmares and flashbacks. A 2010 Department of Veterans Affairs report revealed there are an average of 22 veteran suicides daily. I declare, if it was not for her, I wouldn t be sitting here. She is a lifesaver, he said. Warriors go through a 15-20 week training program by using their dog. The very first stage targets skills needed to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizenship lessons.
