Mood Instability Occurs in Wide Range of Mental Disorders

A study suggests that disposition imbalance occurs in a broad array of anxiety disorder, not only depression, bipolar disorder, and mental disorders. Researchers from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King s College London also found that disposition imbalance was associated with poorer clinical results. Taken collectively, the findings of the study indicate that clinicians should screen for disposition imbalance across all mental health illnesses that are common, according to the researchers. The analysis, which used an automated information extraction system to obtain data on disposition imbalance from electronic health records, comprised nearly 28,000 adults who presented to the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLaM) between April 2006 and March 2013 with a psychotic, affectional or character disorder. The existence of mood uncertainty within one month of presentation was identified using natural language processing (NLP), the researchers noted.
