He Cries Alone: Black Men and PTSD


They are crying out for help. But will anyone listen? They re African American men, fighting with mental illness and post-traumatic stress disorder many are veterans, but many more are civilians fighting in secret, embarrassed. All these are guys like 26-year old James Brown. Brown served two tours in Iraq. When he returned home he was diagnosed with PTSD. He ended up going to jail for a court-made term in El Paso, Texas in the year 2012. That is where he was allegedly detained by several guards in riot gear and pushed him to the earth. He started bleeding through nose, the ears and mouth and his kidneys shut down. Based on media reports, the guards didn t order him medical attention. He went into the jail on a Friday. By Sunday, he was not alive. Brown s case, which is still pending investigation, points to a lot of problems surrounding the criminalization of mental health, PTSD as it relates to black communities and differences in treatment.
