Do You Feel Drawn to Disaster / Fantasy Movies?

This is something I ve noticed in myself for awhile now, and wondered if anyone else feels drawn to disaster and fantasy movies. It came up in therapy today and my psych said it made sense that I was drawn to these kinds of movies, because in viewing them I m working on my stuff - but at a remove. I can t, for example, watch a lot of crime shows because they re too true to everyday life and triggering for me. But I sometimes like to watch certain kinds of disaster/monster movies (but not... Truly An "and What Then?" Game...

I posted a post a while ago, mentioning how I felt often like my life just turns into a what then game, having no real point, just going from one objective to the other, wasting energy. For the last few weeks I can t get strength for anything... I had a goal, to pass to the country competition, and last year, I felt completely like crap for not managing to do it, but there was still some will to go on left, and as I think of myself at this moment, I realize that I turned into one of those... Do You Feel Safe Around Law-enforcement Officers?

A conversation in another thread and current events in the US have combined to make me want to ask this question. I have never felt safe around the police, even though I don t have many big and obvious reasons for it. There have always been stories of mistreatment at the hands of law-enforcement, but the recent grand jury decisions in the Brown and Garner cases have given me real reason to think my fears are founded. I would say, though, that I had so much fear of police discovery drilled... Do You Feel Safe Around Law-enforcement Officers?

Another Veterans Story - Shoot Me Now Media!

I can not believe how disturbing it is to read through the daily news that references Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) to find story after story about veterans and their PTSD. "A veterans struggle to heal PTSD," "Documentary of PTSD in War," "How I Recovered From War," and the list goes on and on, repetitively, when reading the news feed. Shock horror media news agencies, veterans are a minority of the global population affected by PTSD, yet all you do is perpetuate PTSD association with veterans. Why? Let me take a rough guess at answering that question. Ignorance to what PTSD actually is, who it really affects, and pretty much everything about trauma and PTSD. There, I said it! The truth of the matter in relation to media being ignorant, biased, and down right stupid when it comes to researching facts versus sensationalistic content to wow the readers with, regardless of the truth. Saying Hi

I ve been lurking for a few days and registered this morning so I ll post to introduce myself. Hi! I don t know if I even belong here, but these forums have helped me make a little sense of some things recently so, maybe I do. I ve been seeing a therapist for extended postpartum depression (my kid is 2.5, it s no longer hormonal) and she thinks that the depression is trauma related (hyperemesis gravidarum, long difficult labor, and then a somewhat terrifying emergency c-section, etc,... Ecstasy... A Possible Treatment For PTSD

TRONDHEIM, Norway (UPI) -- Ecstasy may help sufferers of post-traumatic stress disorder learn to deal with their memories more effectively, researchers in Norway suggest. "A goal during exposure therapy for PTSD is to recall distressing experiences while at the same time remaining grounded in the present," study authors Pal-Orjan Johansen and Teri Krebs, based at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology said in a statement. Chicken Thighs

Several weeks ago I mentioned to my husband that I fancied some chicken thighs. He does all the food shopping, and generally I m happy to have whatever he picks. He forgot, so I reminded him last week, and when he came back from the shops he waved a pack of chicken at me. Today i got the chicken out, and found - drumsticks. I was disappointed, and then panicky terrified. At first I thought I must be over-reacting to my disappointment, but eventually realised My problem was the... Chicken Thighs

Voices Raised, T Ticked Off And I Am Confused

I have been going through some hard time, I have a lot of things going on at the moment. I am changing jobs, and moving to another province, I am also back at school this year. Everything is happening so fast and at the same time. I have been in a really dark place, found myself emailing my T almost everyday. it also doesn t help that we are over 1500 km away from each other. What Does Your Vet Do To Relax?

Mine is currently in the bathtub and listening to some odd new-age like music... and eating chocolates... because he is pretty pissed off and feels disrespected by everybody including by a subordinate at work who does just the opposite of what he tells him to do and when confronted he does not see the point. So he feels like he wants to yell at him but of course he does not do this. He came home and was pretty angry. Typically he likes sport to relax. Today not The question is for... Massage Therapy

I m not sure if this belongs here...move it if needed. I ve been having other health issues that are somewhat related to depression. (Isn t everything???) There is pain in my left arm that has been there since January. It started with tingling and has now progressed to deep, constant pain. It s in my shoulder blade, deltoid, and tricep. I ve been proactive with my depression. I could feel it come on, so I joined yoga, got in to a therapist, doing the med cocktail thing, and saw my GP. He... Massage Therapy

My Parents' Reality Versus My Reality

I have tried many times to gain independence from my parents, but I am currently caught in a catch-22. I have been unable to support myself for any length of time due to my PTSD and accompanying physical ailments. I keep having to return to my parents house. The problem with this, is that they are the start of my symptoms. They are not my only trauma at this point, but they were the first. New Job And Advice

I ve agreed to take a job as a war correspondent in Ukraine. I ve already signed my resignation documents at my current job and am scheduled to leave Moscow in a couple of weeks. But now I am getting cold feet. I am due to sign more papers tomorrow that will cancel my visa, meaning once I sign them I can no longer reside in Russia legally. This is a vague ramble through my responses to the first three weeks of CBT. Sorry it s long Finally! After three years of battling the NHS I am getting trauma focused CBT. I Enabled Him To Drink

Oh my. My suffering online friend is a recovering alcoholic, dealing with a lot of stresses. Last night he told me he would tell me what happened to him, the cause of his PTSD. Then he said that he would need a drink. He is in a situation where he has no money, working on getting disability with his parents helping him. An Inability To Cry.

Sometimes I feel the need to cry to relieve emotions, other times because I m so upset/hurt/confused and crying is the natural response but no matter how huge the lump in my throat gets; no matter how hot,dry and prickly my eyes get; no matter how much my face and forehead scrunches up; even if I curl up in a ball or hide my face in a pillow the tears will not come and my shoulders won t relax and give into the crying that I really, really need to do. Is There Ever A Point Where Suicide Is The Best Option?

Last night I watched the video on here about young military men who returned and committed suicide, often shortly after having ptsd. I saw their family grieve and how they pleaded with government to take some responsibility. It was very sad to see these young men giving up, giving in, and taking their own life. If I had cancer, or a friend or relative did, and exhausted all treatment options unsuccessfully, I would not question their choice to stop the pain and commit suicide rather than... Nothing Good To Move On To

A lot of people that recover from PTSD or depression, usually do so by moving on to something good in their lives. An example is finding love. If you have nothing good to move on to with your life, you will never get better, only worse. I speak from experience. Sure you can swallow a tablet or attend therapy, but if you have nothing good to move on to with your life, treatments are limited.

Green Tea For Reducing Anxiety? Comments

A little background: my PTSD service pooch has Addisons Disease. Her adrenal glands don t produce the stress hormones cortisol and aldosterone. She is monitored for her electrolytes and gets a shot once a month of synthetic aldosterone. As well, she takes a .05mg of prednisone daily. If she has too much stress I can give her an extra prednisone, but we don t want to give her more prednisone than absolutely necessary due to its toxic effect on the kidneys and liver. Hello everyone. I am therapist currently in my Masters program studying Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy.
